Designing a unified service network

In 2005, SMTC-TISSEO chose to implement, with the assistance of setec, a Unified Services Network (RdSU) project aimed at deploying an IT and telecoms network infrastructure to meet the new requirements of operating the urban bus and metro network, while simultaneously facilitating the deployment of new services for users, the operator, and the organisations responsible for public transport. The deployment of such a shared network 10 years ago was an innovative approach, compared with the deployment of networks dedicated to each system, which could not achieve this level of service at bearable costs.

Since then, the RoSU has been the telecommunications infrastructure for many passengers and operating services, including:

  • Ticketing (Automatic Ticket Dispensers, Bankcard payment)
  • Control and surveillance of Park and Ride facilities (Video surveillance, intercom, equipment control)
  • The IT operator
  • Operator and metro telephony
  • Video surveillance, access control,
  • Passenger information,

In 2017, SMTC-TISSEO is launching a major plan to modernise the RdSU infrastructure, and has once again entrusted setec with the task of assisting the company in completing this project

Our missions

From 2005 to 2008, Setec carried out various AMO assignments, as part of a long-term contract:

  1. Design the target architecture of the RDSU, based on an analysis of the existing system and requirements
  2. Choose the most efficient infrastructure scenario(s), validate the organisational schemes (in particular the level of operation and supervision that will be outsourced)
  3. Supervising the consultation process to enable the most appropriate bids to be selected for the future networks: producing the DCE, scrutinising the bids, finalising the contract
  4. Proceed with the implementation of the RoSU in a timeframe compatible with the arrival of new systems such as ticketing, from validation of the detailed implementation specifications to the VSRs.

Since the beginning of 2017, SMTC-TISSEO has once again retained setec on an AMO contract for the implementation of RdSU v2: technical pre-study, tender monitoring (from the design of the DCE to the finalisation of the contracts with the selected suppliers), deployment management, functional, VA and VSR acceptance

Urban transport

Challenges

Challenge in 2005: Deploy a unified services network (USN)

  • High-performance, enabling the transport of all types of IP flows (video, voice, data)
  • Highly available
  • Allowing the operator to connect any IP system quickly and efficiently and monitor and control the system
  • Adapting to rapidly changing regulatory requirements

Challenge in 2017: Modernise the RdSU network (obsolescence of infrastructure), adapt to new threats (cyber security), and take advantage of new technologies (wire, radio, etc. ) to improve availability and performance, simplify operation and enhance security.

  • Prepare for the challenges of the 2020-2025-2030 Mobility Project, in particular
    • 2019: doubling of line A
    • 2020: urban cable car south and LINEO network
    • 2024: 3rd metro line
