The Paulette and Jane Nardal promenade

Missions
  • Project management for public spaces
  • Creation of a natural cooling island
  • Reduction of soil permeability
  • Increasing the albedo effect
  • Pluvial water management by infiltrating green spaces

The redevelopment programme for the outdoor areas of the former Broussais Hospital in the 14th arrondissement of Paris is a showcase for urban landscaping and circular economy. The former car park has been transformed into a continuous garden that forms a green and blue grid along the length of the landscaping project. Particular attention is paid to the fauna and flora already present.

The project is developing high-quality, recreational public spaces: a planted promenade, communal gardens, landscaped embankments and play areas. Grandstands have been created by reusing granite paving stones.

Challenges

  • Reusing 240,000 cobblestones to build 230 m of dry-stone retaining walls,
  • Develop biodiversity and social links,
  • Organising the works around the hibernation period of the Pipistrelle bat that nests on the site.

Key figures

1 hectare

Upgrading 570 m² of communal gardens with local residents’ associations

1,500 tonnes of materials reused
