In order to meet the urgent need to restore Notre-Dame de Paris, the French government decided to set up a public organisation responsible for the conservation and restoration of the cathedral.

The restoration works on the cathedral bring together a large number of participants, including the Diocesan Association of Paris, which is the exclusive beneficiary of the cathedral, the Chief Architect of Historic Monuments, the DRAC, which is responsible in particular for the conservation of objects and has storage facilities within the monument, the CMN, which runs the guided tour of the towers, and the City of Paris, which is responsible for the works around the cathedral and the esplanade.

Given the large number of projects and their complexity, the public organisation required the skills of a multi-disciplinary team to assist with programming studies and expert appraisals to establish the programme and schedule phases, while identifying the limits of the services to be provided by each stakeholder.

Initiated in the aftermath of the terrible fire that engulfed Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on the 15th of April 2019, the security works on the building were completed in the summer of 2021, allowing the restoration phase to begin.

The main aim of this operation, which involves more than €800m of works, is to reopen the cathedral to worship and visitors in 2024, according to the French President’s ambition: “We will rebuild Notre-Dame in 5 years […], and we will do everything we can to meet this deadline […]. By setting ambitious objectives and working together to achieve them, we can live up to the great constructions that have shaped our history, and demonstrate the fortitude demanded by the times we live in.

The following operations were carried out:

  • Transepts and spire ;
  • Internal cleaning, upper bays, waterproofing of lower sections ;
  • Damaged masonry, restoration of the large roof area ;
  • The belfries (currently not on the CMN “public access” route) ;
  • CET, floors and interior furniture.
