The Kennedy Corniche

setec is involved in the rehabilitation of the Kennedy Corniche in the French city of Marseille. The Kennedy Corniche is a road that runs along the coast south of the city.

It is very popular with local residents and tourists alike, providing a link between the southern districts and the city centre. A classified site since 1924, the corniche underwent major widening works in the 1960s to create a pedestrian walkway overhanging the sea.

It was renamed in 1963 as a tribute to US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who was assassinated that same year. A survey carried out in 2016 showed that the Corniche was suffering from a number of problems relating to the corrosion of the reinforcement. These problems are mainly due to a particularly aggressive maritime environment. In 2016, the Aix Marseille Provence Metropolitan Authority commissioned setec to carry out the complete project management for the renovation work on the Corniche.

The works were divided into 4 phases, each of which took place between the autumn and spring period to allow the public access to the site during the summer months. As the Kennedy Corniche is a particularly busy route, the worksite was subject to severe traffic conditions, requiring the temporary removal of one lane of traffic and the cycle path. A shared path for cyclists and pedestrians was also created and maintained throughout the works. Work began in 2018 from the Marégraphe and completed in spring 2022 near the Nhow hotel.
