The Louis Vuitton Foundation aims to present and conserve works of art.
Designed by architect Frank O. Gehry, it represents the culmination of a formal approach initiated several decades earlier, punctuated with major landmarks in the history of futuristic architecture, such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The construction work included landscaping and major external work. The main body of the building is an arrangement of free forms covered by “icebergs” and glass sheaths (geometrically complex towers and glass ceilings).
A second sheath, which is open and exposed to the winds, is made of 12 glass “sails” resting on a mixed wood and steel frame. These rise 46 m and rest on the primary structure through sloping beams that cut through the sheath.
