Defining a metropolitan strategy for energy networks and production

Missions

Setec has been selected by the Metropolis to provide project management assistance for the development of an integrated strategy for energy networks and production in the Aix-Marseille-Provence area. The assignment involves a number of aspects, such as consolidating and expanding on an inventory of the territory, producing a strategic diagnosis, assistance with implementing an action programme (annual reviews, data processing, awarding contracts, etc.), producing presentation and information media by a communications agency (Mars agency).

The Aix Marseille Provence Metropolis must seek a diversified energy mix and a balance between local control of energy (municipalities, citizens, etc.) and the emergence and development of industrial sectors. Coordinated, high-performance networks are also a key condition for the development of renewable energies: capacity to accommodate local production, coupling between production, consumption and storage, control of usage and load shedding. The involvement of the Metropole should enable support for innovation in the field of smart grids for the benefit of users, the delivery of the most appropriate energy for each use and the inclusion of all local production on the grids. The challenges are commensurate with the potential, making it possible to combine economic development and energy transition, and to define a metropolitan strategy for energy networks and production.Cities & territories

Challenges

Metropolitan France is only 7% self-sufficient in energy. This dependence represents an annual cost of 5.5 billion euros for the territory, or more than 10% of the Metropole’s GDP. Finally, only 30% of total energy production is of renewable origin, mainly thanks to the 5 hydraulic dams on the EDF canal.
