French nuclear power plants flood mitigation network

Missions
  • Site visits and data collection
  • Breakdown of the power plants into catchment areas
  • Network integration under Hydranet® software
  • Simulation with reference standards of rainfalls
  • Modeling taking into account the worst rainfall duration
  • Review and analysis of the results

EDF CNEPE (French nuclear power plant network) decided to ensure the protection of nuclear power plants against floods caused by extreme rainfalls. The chosen methodology combines both retention installations and drainage systems.
EDF CNEPE entrusted setec to develop the stormwater network model on 18 French nuclear power sites in order to model the flood behavior in case of extreme thunderstorms. This assignment required the collection of existing documentation and on-site measurements. The model was developed under Hydanet, the urban hydrology software created by setec in 2008.

Challenges

The tropical-type design storms required a specific approach for the modelling.
