Missions

As a potential sponsor on the project, MERIDIAM wished to evaluate the risks induced by this technology and therefore commissioned setec to evaluate the consistency of the project with emphasis on the following main technical elements:

Planning energy efficiency and irradiation
Technical questions on the receiver, storage of molten salts and steam turbines
Long term schedule of maintenance operations
Impact of the development plan template

As part of an invitation to tender for the NOOR III project, the central solar power tower (CSP) has many advantages which include:

High efficiency solar to electric
High heat storage capacity and high reliability

Although technology has proven its ability in numerous prototypes and industrial realizations around the world, the competitive aspect of the tender challenges manufacturers to introduce new improvements in power supply, automation and storage management. What’s more, the lack of feedback on a long term basis results in risks to the durability of the plant. Therefore, special attention must be concentrated on the specifications and the maintenance schedules of operations. width=

Challenges

Among the main CSP technologies available, the central receiver appears to defy the photovoltaic performance, aiming towards a solar power efficacy of between 15 and 17% (up to 30% for R &D design) lowering the cost per kWh.

The entire CSP technology can easily accept thermal stockage during plant operations at peak hours.
