Technical studies and monitoring

Defining technical solutions, establishing technical and specific terms and conditions, estimating costs, and monitoring the construction phase on a regular basis until completion.

Following a significant flood that occurred on the 20th of May 2025, the Var Departmental Council commissioned setec to carry out studies and oversee the works for the redevelopment of the Quicule riverbed and the reinforcement of a footbridge and a road bridge.

Given the urgent nature of the situation, the technical studies had to be undertaken quickly so that works could begin as soon as possible to secure the structures that were still in use.

The project had to take into account environmental considerations due to the presence of the watercourse bed directly within the construction site, hydraulic challenges by restoring the watercourse bed to its original level, and technical challenges related to addressing scouring at the abutments. Managing the project timeline is also a major challenge, particularly to ensure the work is completed before the next period of heavy rainfall.

For this project, setec provides all technical studies and supervision required for the redevelopment of the Quicule and the safety and restoration of the engineering structures, from the preliminary design stage through to the construction phase.

setec‘s involvement also takes into account the specific hydraulic and geotechnical challenges of this project.

Key features: 

The project involves securing two structures that cross the Quicule stream: a footbridge, consisting of a steel-framed deck resting on two masonry abutments, and a road bridge, consisting of a metal deck extended by a reinforced concrete beam bridge supported by two masonry abutments.

Challenges

This project was particularly urgent. Although the structures were weakened, they were still partially in use, which meant the work had to be carried out swiftly and efficiently to ensure completion before the autumn rains.

This urgency therefore requires meticulous phasing and constant monitoring of the structures’ condition, including the implementation of daily topographical surveys.
