Upgrading and expansion of the TCL tram network’s operating systems

Missions

setec is providing full design & construction supervision for the renovation of the tram network’s control centres and the modernisation of the associated operational systems. The scope of the project includes design work and construction supervision, adapting the systems to the new tram lines and the BRT scheme, as well as the technical coordination of the different projects under SYTRAL Mobilités’ mandate plan.

As part of the 2021–2026 mandate plan, SYTRAL Mobilités is implementing an ambitious programme to develop and modernise the public transport network in the Lyon metropolitan area. This includes the creation of three new tram lines, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line and the modernisation of existing infrastructure.

Key projects include the renovation of the centralised tram control centres and the modernisation of the traction power management system. This equipment is essential for the operation of a network that serves 73 local authorities and handles over 1.69 million journeys every day.

The project aims to adapt operational systems to the network’s expansion while ensuring continuity of service and the safety of the facilities. In particular, it involves the expansion of the control centres, the integration of future lines and the modernisation of the traction power management system.

Our teams in action

setec is acting as design & construction supervision for the renovation of the centralised tram control centres and the adaptation of the associated operational systems. The teams are responsible for all design works, monitoring of the works and technical coordination of the project.

The project includes the establishment of a temporary control centre to maintain operations during the works, the expansion of the facilities to accommodate up to 18 operators, and the modernisation of the supervision tools and operational support systems.

setec is also supporting the integration of the new tram lines and the future BRT into the network’s operational systems, as well as the modernisation of traction power management, the upgrading of passenger information systems, ticketing equipment, telecommunications and digital infrastructure.

Finally, our teams are responsible for the technical coordination of the different operations under the mandate to ensure consistency across interfaces, optimise the phasing of works and minimise the impact on network operations.

Challenges

  • Maintain operational continuity during the renovation of control centres, particularly through the installation of a temporary control centre.
  • Support the network’s expansion, with the integration of three new tram lines and a BRT line into the operational systems.
  • Modernise and digitise traction power management, while guaranteeing the safety and continuous availability of the system.
  • Coordinate the different projects and their technical interfaces, in particular power cuts and works on existing installations.
