Setec’s mission
Research & development : Floatport is an innovative solution for port logistics challenges related to the mass production of offshore wind turbines.
The project
Faced with the challenge of mass production of offshore wind turbines, setec has established itself as a provider of innovative port solutions. Among these, the Floatport solution consists of a floating port zone designed to compensate for the lack of available land and reduce environmental impact. This solution stands out for its reversibility and adaptability, which extends its potential uses and optimises return on investment.
Building on a solid foundation of experience in the design of pre-stressed concrete floating structures, setec has developed this floating port infrastructure consisting of eco-designed prefabricated concrete caissons, assembled directly on the water. The structure can be configured in different ways to meet a range of needs: assembly area, component storage space, mooring area for floats or wind turbines in the testing or waiting phase, etc.
The possibility of separating the basic caissons offers other possibilities: the port owner can reuse them for other functions, or they can be towed to other port sites, depending on the investment strategies of developers and constructors, who may also become owners.
The challenges
The development of offshore wind power gives ports a central logistical role in the production of these giant structures.
Floating wind turbines will exceed 300 metres in height and rest on floats covering approximately 10,000 m².
To meet national targets, nearly 3,000 wind turbines will need to be built over twenty years, each with a capacity of 15 MW.
Components such as 120-metre blades and 1,000-tonne turbines require specially adapted port infrastructure.
This involves the creation of large storage areas, reinforced quays and significant water depths (at least 12 metres).
Each port must therefore define a specific strategy, manage co-activity and sometimes collaborate with other ports, notwithstanding competition.
